RPAG 101 | How to Use the RPAG Scorecard to Get More Plans

Written by RPAG® | Dec 4, 2025 6:41:41 PM

In this session, RPAG’s Director of Customer Growth, Mark Van Riper, and Solutions Engineer, Alexis Patenaude explained how retirement plan advisors can use the RPAG Scorecard System to monitor investments, attract new clients, and improve fiduciary oversight.

This session gave attendees a roadmap to mastering the platform’s tools, methodologies, and reporting capabilities. Here is everything you need to know to maximize the takeaways from this event.

Becoming a Scorecard Expert (1:50)

The session began with an overview of why the RPAG Scorecard was created and how it supports consistent fund evaluation. The Scorecard uses a 10-point system built around criteria commonly used by institutional investors, which helps advisors explain performance in a clear and structured way. Alexis walked through the core objectives of the Scorecard and highlighted how its optional integration with the Investment Policy Statement strengthens fiduciary oversight. Advisors learned how the Scorecard gives a single, easy-to-understand score that highlights potential issues and pinpoints specific metrics for review. The scorecard’s quantitative framework distills complex performance and risk data into a clear, consistent methodology, empowering advisors to make prudent, well-documented investment recommendations and decisions.

Creating and Managing Prospects in the RPAG Portal (3:20)

The webinar covered how the Scorecard sorts funds into active, passive, and asset allocation categories to ensure accurate comparisons. Alexis explained that each score is built using quantitative and qualitative inputs on a 0 to 10 scale. Eighty percent of the score is driven by quantitative factors such as modern portfolio theory statistics, expenses, optimization analysis, and peer group rankings. The remaining portion focuses on qualitative items such as manager tenure. Understanding how these elements come together helps advisors manage prospects with a clearer view of fund structure and evaluation criteria, empowering you to bring deeper perspectives and easily digestible insights into prospect conversations.

Building and Reviewing the Fund Lineup (10:40)

Alexis reviewed active, passive, and asset allocation funds and explained the scoring requirements for each. Active funds require five years of monthly returns and focus on track record, style consistency, and the ability to outperform peers. Passive funds require three years of monthly returns because the goal is benchmark tracking rather than outperformance, and custom peer groups ensure accurate analysis.  Asset allocation funds are reviewed for diversification decisions, long-term results, and peer group rankings supported by updated style analytics. Differences such as these help advisors evaluate lineups with a more precise understanding of how each fund type is measured in the Scorecard and enable you to monitor performance proactively rather than reactively.

Creating a Compelling Fiduciary Investment Review

The review process begins by applying the Scorecard to identify strengths and weaknesses within a lineup and determine where further analysis is needed. Advisors can use the Scorecard results to highlight underperforming funds, compare strategies, and present a consistent evaluation method to plan sponsors. The session emphasized that the Scorecard’s structure supports fiduciary discussions by offering transparent scoring and clear rationale for any recommendations. By understanding each scoring component, advisors can guide sponsors through the review with greater clarity and purpose. This approach sets the stage for a more compelling and data-driven fiduciary investment review.
